The ECL is an English Comprehension Level Examination. It tests and evaluates listening and reading comprehension in American English.

The test has 100 multiple choice questions and is composed of two parts:

  • Listening Part: 60-66 questions.
  • Reading Part: 34-40 questions.

The test takes about 60 minutes to administer and is held in one session.

The ECL ( English Comprehension Level ) test is the primary instrument used for measuring the English language reading and listening proficiency for those who are nominated to attend courses in the USA or Canada.

In addition to testing done at the DLIELC, the ECL is also administered in approximately 120 overseas sites, and over 100 sites in the U.S. The ECL is administered in one of two versions: paper/pencil or online computer-delivered. These tests consist of 100 multiple-choice items, take about 60 minutes to administer, and are scored on a scale of 0 to 100.
